What Actually Drives Software Development Costs

The single largest cost driver is never the choice of framework — it remains uncertainty. Every open question in the specification which is better monolith or microservices converted into a contingency somewhere in the quote. A team that has no visibility into what happens on the unhappy path has to assume a pessimistic case. Putting two weeks into a proper discovery often reduces the overall figure much more than any rate negotiation.
Connections to other systems remain the second big multiplier. A feature that touches only your own data is predictable; the same screen talking to a legacy ERP is not. The unknown hides in the third party: undocumented APIs, waiting on someone else's team, inconsistent data. Ask each bidder to list every external system, react js development company as this is where estimates break.
The requirements nobody writes down silently change the number. An application used by a handful of staff is a very different build from the same functionality handling thousands of external customers. Security reviews, uptime targets, performance under load, traceability and localisation all add real engineering time. State them early or you can expect the estimate to move later.
Who actually does the work matters. An hourly rate says very little on its own: a senior hire node engineer at twice the price can be cheaper per delivered feature than a pair of junior ai developers for hire who require constant review. Ask as well what else appears on the invoice: delivery management, testing, DevOps and UX design have to be done by someone, but they should be itemised.
The quoted figure is rarely the full cost of ownership. Budget for cloud costs, third-party licences, logging and alerting and a maintenance allowance each year. A reasonable rule of thumb is that software in active use consumes a noticeable fraction of the original budget per year simply to stay current. Leaving it out of the budget has always been the most frequent planning error.
